The tree gives him no warning. Your website can.

The short answer

Tree work is the only job bought against something that has not happened yet, so he postpones it until the storm. Teach him the four signs he walks past daily and the call comes before, not after.

Every other trade gets called by the problem itself. The roof leaks, the furnace stops, the gate sags, the drain backs up — the job announces itself and the homeowner picks up the phone. Tree work does not work like that. A tree gives no notice at all. It stands there looking exactly the way it looked last year, and then on one windy Tuesday in November it is lying across the garage and the neighbor’s car.

Which produces the shape of your year, and you already know the shape. Weeks where the phone barely moves. Then a storm goes through and forty people call in two days, all of them urgent, all of them wanting the same Saturday. And walking up the driveways behind that storm is a crew from three states away with a chipper, no certificate and no coverage, taking the work that was going to be yours.

The postponement is the whole problem

Nobody is choosing your competitor. They are choosing not-yet. A homeowner looks up at a large tree and thinks, correctly, that it has been there longer than he has and will probably outlast him too. Nothing about it looks like an emergency, and everything he might spend on it competes with a kitchen, a vacation, a car repair that is definitely needed.

So the only useful thing a tree care website can do is change what he sees when he looks out the window. Not persuade him that trees are dangerous in general — he already half-believes that and it changes nothing. Show him what is on his own tree, in his own yard, that he has been walking past.

Four things he walks past

The US Forest Service names them plainly. Trees with conks, broken tops, basal scars, numerous downed limbs, ants or an abundance of woodpecker holes may have internal rot; trees missing bark or limbs may have structural defects; and cracks develop in large branches after ice. None of that is arcane. It is all visible from a lawn chair, and none of it means anything to somebody who has never been told.

Give each one a short section with your own photograph — a real conk on a real root collar in your own town, not a stock picture of a forest. Say what it means, say what it does not mean, and say plainly which ones are urgent and which ones simply want watching. The honesty is doing work here: a page where all four signs mean call us immediately reads as a sales pitch, and he will treat it as one.

And say the hard part out loud, because your competitor will not: some of these signs mean the tree is already unsafe and the answer is removal, not pruning. A homeowner braced for a sales job is disarmed by somebody who tells him the expensive answer before he has agreed to anything.

The paperwork question, answered before the storm

Every tree site in every town says fully insured. It is the least persuasive sentence in the trade, because it is on all of them and none of them shows anything. Meanwhile the actual risk to the homeowner is not abstract: if an uninsured man falls out of his tree, or a limb goes through his roof, the conversation that follows happens with his own insurer and it goes badly.

He does not know that. Tell him, on a calm Tuesday in spring, in the place he is reading anyway — and tell him what to ask for, from anybody, including you. That paragraph is worth more than every badge on your homepage, and it is the paragraph the door-knocking crew after the storm cannot survive.

What he should ask any tree company	Why it matters to him
A certificate of insurance sent directly from the insurer, not a photo of one	A photograph proves a policy existed on the day it was photographed. It proves nothing about today.
That the certificate names both liability and workers’ compensation	The second one is the one that decides who pays if somebody is hurt in his yard.
Who is responsible for the stump, and whether that is in the price	The single most common argument after tree work, and it costs nothing to settle in writing beforehand.
What happens to the wood and the brush	He is picturing a clean yard. Some crews leave the logs. Saying which you do is free and it is remembered.
Whether the work needs a permit where he lives	Some towns protect certain trees or sizes. A company that raises this unprompted is obviously not passing through.

The spring email to last year’s customers — the one that fills the quiet weeks before anybody else has thought about trees

Subject: “Two things worth looking at on your [oak/maple] before summer”
Opening, no pitch: “We took down the dead limb over your driveway last [month]. While we were up there we noticed [specific thing]. It is not urgent, but it is worth a look before the leaves are full and nobody can see anything.”
The teaching line: “Two things to glance at from the ground: anything shelf-shaped growing where the trunk meets the soil, and any crack in a limb thicker than your arm. Either one means send me a photo, not that something is wrong.”
The honest limit: “Most of what people send me turns out to be nothing, and I say so. It costs you a photograph and it costs me two minutes.”
The close, with a date in it: “I have space the week of [date] and again in [month]. After the first big storm those weeks fill in a day, which is the only reason I am writing in [spring month] rather than [fall month].”
The one line about paperwork, everywhere on the site: “Ask us — or anybody — for a certificate of insurance sent straight from the insurer, showing liability and workers’ compensation. If a company will not do that, that is your answer.”

Read the close again. It gives a reason for the timing that is true and is about him, not about your schedule: after the first storm those weeks are gone. That is not manufactured urgency — it is the plain arithmetic of your trade, and he can check it against his own memory of the last storm.

What this is actually worth

A tree job booked in March and a tree job booked the morning after a storm are the same work at very different cost to you. One is planned, crewed properly and priced calmly. The other is overtime, a waiting list, forty disappointed callers and a week of saying no to people who will remember that you said no.

The website cannot make trees fall over more conveniently. What it can do is make sure that when he finally looks up at that trunk, he sees something, and that the number he reaches for is the one that taught him to see it.
